Las Portadas de Semillas: Index
Year after year as part of Tepoztlán's annual fiesta on September 8, it has become a tradition to construct a portal with a mosaic made of seeds in their natural colors which arches over the entry to the town's principal church. This portal, La Portada de Semillas, is financed by the "tianguistas", the vendors who sell from stalls around the market. It is they who contribute money for its construction, but this also involves a great deal of work over several months in which men, women, and children pass countless hours gluing seeds one by one to create the portal. The Portada de Semillas serves as the community's visual commentary on the events of the past year and hopes for the year to come.
Example: La Portada de Semillas in 1998
In 1998, the theme of the portada was the struggle of the Tepoztecans to defeat the construction on their communal lands of a Golf Club and other projects which in their opinion were alien and destructive to their culture and to the ecology of their community.
In the following pages, one can see the progress of the mural's themes from year to year and the evolution of its distinctive artistic style. On the page devoted to each, there are one or more photos of the portada, a drawing of the portada as published in the programs given out at its inauguration (in the years that such programs were published), and a guide to the mural's symbolism. These texts have been left in the words of their Tepoztecan authors.
